Alma Chapter 1
Summary: In the first year of the reign of the judges, a man named Nehor begins to teach false doctrine and established his own church and begins to teach priestcraft. He contends with Gideon (the righteous leader who helped lead the people of Limhi out of bondage)and slays him. He brought before Alma, the chief judge and is executed for his crimes. But nevertheless, priestcraft and persecution of the people of the Church begins to spread among some of the people. This gets to be a problem in the second year of the judges. Even so. the faithful people and priests of the Church continue to be steadfast in following God's word and they prosper exceedingly compared to the others.
Lessons Taught/To be Learned:
Nehor practiced self-promotion and preached for his own sake to gain riches and honors. He also slayed Gideon who challenged his church and belief system. His examples show that we should be suspicious of those who seek personal gain or wealth from preaching or who try to enforce their religious belief system by force.
