1 Nephi Chapter 16
Summary: Nephi's brothers complain that the things Nephi has told them are hard. Nephi and his brother marry the daughters of Ishmael. Lehi is directed by the Lord to travel deeper into the wilderness. He discovers a "Liahona" (a round ball made of brass with two spindles - similar to a compass). The Liahona acts as a compass and "points" the way for them to go. Occasionally, messages from the Load on written on the Liahona. Ishmael dies and his daughters and Nephi's brothers murmur because of their afflictions.
Lessons Taught/To be Learned:
- The Liahona acted as a compass to help Lehi and his family in their day. The Holy Spirit is our guide in our day. See Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints - Our Own Liahona - David A. Bednar.
Key Scriptures (italicized and in quotes):
"10 And it came to pass that as my father arose in the morning, and went forth to the tent door, to his great astonishment he beheld upon the ground a round ball of curious workmanship; and it was of fine brass. And within the ball were two spindles; and the one pointed the way whither we should go into the wilderness."
"29 And there was also written upon them a new writing, which was plain to be read, which did give us understanding concerning the ways of the Lord; and it was written and changed from time to time, according to the faith and diligence which we gave unto it. And thus we see that by small means the Lord can bring about great things."
