1 Nephi Chapter 1

Summary:   The Book of Mormon starts with this first chapter written by Nephi, a prophet of God. Nephi begins by telling a story about his father, Lehi, who is also a prophet. Lehi has a vision where he "sees the heavens open" and he sees God. He then see "One descending out of the midst of heaven". This one he is describing is Jesus Christ, the Messiah. Lehi learns of the destruction of Jerusalem from Jesus and he therefore went forth among the Jewish people and told them that if they did not repent, Jerusalem would be destroyed. The Jews mocked him and tried to slay him, but they were unsuccessful because he was a faithful servant of the Lord. For a historical reference, see Historical Setting for the Book of Mormon.
