1 Nephi Chapter 3

Summary:   Lehi directs his sons to go back to Jerusalem to obtain the plates of brass that contain "the records of the Jews from the beginning down to the reign of Zedekiah" and the prophecies of holy prophets from the past. The plates also contained the genealogy of Lehi's forefathers. In an attempt to get the records, Laban, the owner of the records, steal Lehi's sons property and tries to slay them. They escape unharmed, but the eldest sons, Laman and Lemuel beat their younger brothers with a rod. An angel of the Lord comes and rebukes the older brothers and tells them that the Lord will deliver Laban and the records to them.

Lessons Taught/To be Learned:

God gives us commandments for our own benefit. Obeying the commandments is an important part of growing your faith and testimony. God would never give us commandments that would be out of reach to attain. Therefore, saying you cannot keep a commandment because it is hard, is your way of making a choice NOT to obey the commandment, because, God would never give a commandment to you that he knows you could not keep.

Key Scriptures (italicized and in quotes):

"7 ...I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them."
