1 Nephi Chapter 7
Summary: The Lord tells Lehi that the need to have another family to grow his posterity now that they have left Jerusalem. Therefore, the sons of Lehi return to Jerusalem to petition Ishmael and his daughters to join them on their journey. Ishmael agrees. On their way back to the wilderness, Laman and Lamuel along with two of the daughter of Ishmael revolt because they want to go back and live the easy life they had in Jerusalem. After much arguing, Laman and Lamuel attempt to bind and subdue Nephi. Nephi prays to the Lord, and through his faith he breaks free, chastises them and it able to finally convince them to trust in the Lord's plans. Realizing that Nephi is right, they finally stop resisting and ask for forgiveness.
Lessons Taught/To be Learned:
Nephi was able to convince his brothers not to go back to Jerusalem because back in Jerusalem the people has rejected the prophets. He also told them that their father had prophesied that the destruction of Jerusalem was imminent. Had they gone back, the would have probably been destroyed. The lesson and what we can take for this is: When the spirit of the Lord ceases to be in the people, tragedy usually follows. Historical accounts of this can be seen in Noah's time (with the Arc), the Egyptians during the time of Moses, and Sodom and Gomorrah. These are just a few examples.
Key Scriptures (italicized and in quotes):
"12 Yea, and how is it that ye have forgotten that the Lord is able to do all things according to his will, for the children of men, if it so be that they exercise faith in him? Wherefore, let us be faithful to him."
