1 Nephi Chapter 8
Summary: In one of the most iconic chapters in the Book, Lehi describes a vision he had regarding the "tree of life". He goes to the tree, partakes of the fruit, and desires that his family partake as well. He see an "iron rod", "a strait and narrow path", a river of dirty water, a mist of darkness, and a great and spacious building with people in fine apparel mocking the people who partake of the fruit of the tree. His wife, Nephi and son Sam come and partake of the fruit, but his two other sons Laman and Lemuel refuse to follow. This chapter is a significant theme that shapes much of the rest of the Book of Mormon. The symbolism of this vision is outlined extremely well in the following diagram from the Book of Mormon - Student Manual (religion 121-122). A video depicting this chapter can be viewed at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints - Book of Mormon Videos.
Lessons Taught/To be Learned:
- The tree of life can be viewed as symbol of Jesus Christ and his infinite atonement
- The mist of darkness is Satan's way of keeping you from the tree. The iron rod and the strait and narrow path represent following Jesus Christ and obeying his commandments
- The desirous and delicious fruit of the tree represent the wonderful blessing and benefits you receive by following Jesus.
Key Scriptures (italicized and in quotes):
"24 And it came to pass that I beheld others pressing forward, and they came forth and caught hold of the end of the rod of iron; and they did press forward through the mist of darkness, clinging to the rod of iron even until they did come forth and partake of the fruit of the tree."
